Description
The basic minor chord, 1-b3-5, is often extended by soloists and chord players with a b7 (m7) or a b7 and 9 (m9). It can also have an 11 or a 13 added to it.
Standard scale choice
For this chord type, you should use the Dorian mode: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7
Hip options
There's so many hip things to play over a minor chord, it's hard to know where to begin. Here goes:
- You could play lines based on triads formed from the chord extensions, e.g. b7-9-11 or 5-b7-9;
- or play the minor pentatonic (1-b3-4-5-b7) built on the 5th or 2nd degrees of the scale;
- or substitute the m(Maj7) chord, and use any of the suggestions for that chord type;
- or include the natural 3 as a passing tone between the b3 and 4 to give an octatonic (8-note) 'bebop scale'.
