Gb7#9
Description
Sometimes known as the 'Hendrix chord' for its use in songs like Foxy Lady and Purple Haze, this chord is the same as a dominant 7 chord, but with a #9 near the top of the voicing: 1-3-5-b7-#9
Standard scale choice
Of course, Hendrix was able to solo over this chord using the minor pentatonic and blues scale. If you're feeling more adventurous, you could use the the 'reversed' diminished scale, which alternates semitone-wholetone-semitone-wholetone-... for the whole octave. 1 b2 #2 3 #4 5 6 b7
Hip options
- If you use the diminished scale, notice that it is possible to build a major or a minor triad on every other note of the scale. Lines made up from these triads can sound very modern.
- Another 'trick' is to alternate between the minor pentatonic built on the root and the minor pentatonic a semitone above the root
- A further tactic is to substitute a 7alt chord, and use any of the options available there.
